How to Become a Science Exchange Intern

 

The following is the typcial process you will undergo when you become a Science Exchange student. Contact us any time for more help, or more detailed information.
  1. The student fills out an application form and pays an application fee. This can be a deposit on the future package.
  2. The Science Exchange Internship Counselor calls the student for a brief phone interview.
  3. The Science Exchange researches internship opportunities abroad that meet the student's needs.
  4. Upon verbal approval from the foreign organization, thesis advisor, and the student, The Science Exchange will offer an a la carte internship package in writing. It may contain options such as:
    • Room rental
    • Medical Insurance
    • Travel insurance
    • Plane fare, ground transportation
    • Car rental
    • Spanish immersion class
    • Excursions to local attractions
    • Cell phone and prepaid card
    • Administrative Fees
    • SDSU credit for one of the following options:
      Course number Units Title
      SDSU BIOL 299 1, 2 or 3 Undergraduate Research
      SDSU BIOL, GEOG, Latin American Studies 499 1, 2 or 3 Undergraduate Special Study
      SDSU BIOL 797 1, 2 or 3 Graduate Research
      SDSU BIOL 798 1, 2 or 3 Graduate Special Study
      USD MARS 496 1, 2 or 3 Internship
  5. The student fills out and returns the forms in the offer package and sends a refundable down payment.
  6. The Science Exchange writes a customized work plan containing the following information:
    • specific research needs of the student
    • specific research needs of the foreign mentor
    • work schedule, work rules, safety rules of the project
  7. The student, the academic advisor, the mentor, and (if credit is desired) the SDSU professor who approves open university credit will sign the work plan and return it to The Science Exchange.
  8. The student is encouraged to take a Spanish language class before departure or in country.
  9. The student obtains all necessary travel documents with the help of The Science Exchange.
  10. The student receives pre-departure orientation from The Science Exchange.
  11. The student receives an in-country orientation and training from the mentor.
  12. The student works on the research project under the mentor’s supervision.
  13. Before returning to the United States, both the student and the foreign organization complete a survey on the internship experience.
  14. If SDSU credit is desired, before returning to the United States, the student makes a presentation to the foreign organization and writes a scientific paper. After returning to the United States, the student turns in the paper to The Science Exchange for a grade, which will be issued by the biology department at San Diego State University. If the student is not from SDSU, the student petitions for the transfer of SDSU credits to their home university.
  15. As a service to the scientific community, The Science Exchange encourages and facilitates joint publications and conference presentations resulting from the student’s research abroad.
